Gmail Goes Offline
Friday, January 30, 2009 @ 6:28 pm by Josh Burcham
If you haven’t had a chance yet to take Gmail offline. You need to. I migrated to completely Google from native apps on my PowerBook about four months ago: Gmail, Calendar, Reader, Docs, and Google Apps for Ridgepoint’s stuff. SIDE NOTE: Churches, you need to make the move to Google Apps for all your email, communication, and intranet needs! Free for Non-Profits and Google will beat whatever system you probably using.
The one downside to Gmail was that it was online and only online. I don’t have internet at home and it’s a pain to plugin my AT&T internet card for something simple like looking up an email. Now I have the FULL power of Gmail online and offline. Check it out:

Churches, want to hear about my experience with Google Apps and the setup process? Let me know. I would love to help. Contact me.

Growing Up by Location
Thursday, January 29, 2009 @ 4:10 pm by Josh Burcham
Post inspired by Ragamuffin Souls post. If you don’t read Carlso’s blog, you should. King blogger in ministry world.
I’m a mut of sorts. So I though it would be cool to journey down Google Street view and remember the old times.
Born at St. Bernadines Hospital. Feb. 24th (shameless birthday plug)
Lived on Sepulveda till my parent’s divorce. San Bernardino, CA
Lived in Highland, CA for a short time, but can’t find it for the life of me (I would of been in 1st-2nd grade).
Small stint in Merino Valley
Three years in Watertown, SD on Jonathon Drive. Best Google could give me.
Moved to the warm country. Peoria, AZ on Camino de Oro
Rental house before my parents moved to Colorado. Peoria, AZ
Where have you lived/grown up? Before your adult life? Check out Google Street view here.

Church Org Chart
Thursday, January 29, 2009 @ 10:18 am by Josh Burcham

How have you or how would you structure your church staff and Ministries? Why? Do you have a Senior Pastor, Music/Worship Pastor, Youth Pastor, Discipleship Pastor, Finance Pastor, Executive Pastor, Lead Pastor, Prayer Pastor, Small Group Pastor, Best Pastor, Small Pastor, Community Pastor, Campus Pastor, Big Pastor, Tall Pastor…?
I have to make a confession: I love org charts. I love to see how things work. I love to know the why behind the chart. I’m a student of leadership and ministry. I want to learn all the ways people are doing it out there; so I can choose the best for the vision. When I visit a church’s website I don’t go to the history, sermon or media page first. I got to the staff page. I want to know what positions that they have deemed important; then to the ministries page to do the same thing, but that is another post.
I’ve have talked and read up on churches across the nation, and for that matter the world, about their staff structure. I’ve learned a few things, good and bad, from these churches:
1. Your structure is important. Not because it’s important to know who is in charge, but to get your vision done. You can’t build a structure if you don’t know what God is calling you to do. I would start there.
2. There isn’t a right one. Your God-given vision is different then other churches; which means how they do ministry is different as well. There isn’t a church out there that is doing it right for your church. Yeah, learn from other churches and with other leaders, but don’t just copy them. You want to have the “right” structure for your vision.
3. You can change your org chart. Vision complete…God moving in a different direction..change your structure. Structure not working…the wrong position…change it. It’s okay. As a leader you have to make the hard decisions. It is not easy, but it is necessary.
4. No structure is still structure. Churches have felt God call them to no org chart, which is great, as long as it fits their vision. It’s okay to be different (that sentence could probably be it’s own bullet). Don’t just get lazy and drop the ball. Take the time and work through your vision.
5. Structure is for your pride. Struggle with pride as the lead/senior/main pastor? Build accountability in to your system. Let it hold you accountable. Don’t build a system to boost your pride.
What’s Your Org Chart? Would love hear about it?

It’s been over a year since I’ve been in a paid ministry position and I’ve missed it. Here is tribute to the “good old days” of the past, as I look forward to the new adventures God has in store for the future.

iPhone Desktop
Saturday, January 24, 2009 @ 2:37 pm by Josh Burcham
Saw someone review the Apps that live on their iPhone’s desktop and I thought it was a cool idea. Let me share with you which Apps made my top 15. You need to understand some things about me, though. First, the icon has to have a great look or it will get bumped and second, I don’t like to have my desktops full of Apps (I have to have one less, it looks better that way). I know, I have some serious problems.
My four desktops. There is another page with some scrap apps on it, but nothing to blog about.
Living on my main page it my most used Apps, outside of games. Since I probably use the games more often. Apple Apps: Safari, Calendar, Camera, Photos, Clock, Calculator, Maps, & Apps Store.
Third Party Apps:
OmniFocus: been using OmniGroup’s app of the computer for awhile now and have come to depend on it. It’s task software on steroids. Great for those of us that don’t focus well or get overwhelmed easily. Only thing this App is missing is push notification (not the apps fault, but hard to use without it).
Bible: made by LifeChurch.tv’s Digerati Team. Sporting 40 translations and giving you the power of YouVersion in your pocket. One of the best designed Apps on my phone.
Evernote: note taking software that lives on my Mac, iPhone and on the web. Syncs all together so I always have what I need. Honestly, I really only look things up in the Evernote App, rather then actually creating new notes. Able to create text, picture and voice notes. It can’t be beat. Search feature is great! Made by Evernote.
Tweetie: I’ve gone back and forth when it comes to Twitter Apps. I’ve tried Twitterrific and TwitterFon both good, but don’t have all the features that Tweetie holds. Made by Atebits. Follow me on Twitter!
Facebook: I have this App because I have Facebook, but nine times out of ten I’m headed to their website because the App doesn’t do something I need it to do. Facebook users, worth picking up for all the basics. Works great keeping up with what friends are up to. Friend me on Facebook!
1Password: now this company has ruined me. I can’t remember a password to save my life. Thank goodness I’m able to sync this App with my computer and have everything in at my finger tips. Because of App Store rules you have to use 1Passwords’ browser which isn’t the friendliest, but works great for just looking up a password or username. Made by Agile Web Solutions.
Last, but definitely not least.
Google Reader: I live in my google reader and to have it on my phone is amazing. For those days I won’t be in front of my computer or when I’m bored waiting in line. It’s not actually an App, but a link to my google reader online. Which has been optimized for the iPhone! Got to love Google! Follow my blog in your google reader.

Night on the Town
Saturday, January 24, 2009 @ 9:36 am by Josh Burcham
Hung out with Nathan and Andrew downtown last night. Went to Cheesecake Factory and ESPN Zone. Shot some footage while we were down there for your enjoyment. We had a pretty good time. Bowled and played some racing games together. I rocked the first game of bowling, Nathan beat me by one on our second game. Racing games, I just suck at. Could get out of last place again Nathan and Andrew. If there is any colorful language I apologize.
